MUM helps form new Iowa College Sustainability Alliance Maharishi University of Management (MUM) Professor Lonnie Gamble and staff member Steve Langerud recently spearheaded the formation the Iowa College Sustainability Alliance along with faculty at Grinnell College and Luther College—two of Iowa's leading private colleges. The purpose of the Alliance is to organize exchanges and collaborative projects among students and faculty at colleges across Iowa. Their first initiative will be a summer sustainability institute for students that will be hosted at MUM next summer. It will then rotate among institutions. Other collaborations may include sharing guest speakers. For example, the former Minister of Education for Bhutan may again visit MUM later this year and, if so, will participate in an exchange with Grinnell college. "Faculty at other colleges I've visited typically say that MUM students are head and shoulders above the students at those colleges in terms of their understanding of deep sustainability, their practical application of these principles, and finally, their post-graduate activities that bring these ideas to life as social and business entrepreneurs and activists," Mr. Langerud said. He said that in the area of sustainability MUM is admired for its innovative curriculum and outcomes. Speaking of MUM's study-abroad programs, one student said, "I am so jealous of those students. I wish I had known about MUM when I was picking a college." Six students from DePauw will join Mr. Gamble on the course that will head to Hawaii in January. And many are interested in joining MUM students in Bhutan this summer.
