Maharishi University of Management (MUM) alumnus Ken Roseboro, publisher of the The Organic & Non-GMO Report, was interviewed for the recently released documentary GMO OMG. The film tells the story of a father’s discovery of GMOs and his attempts to avoid them and feed his family healthy foods.

Ken earned his MA in professional writing from MUM in 1992. “The program really gave me a huge boost to become a professional writer,” he said. “I have been writing ever since I graduated and now I feel that my writing is helping to educate more and more people about the importance of non-GMO and organic foods.”

Ken began his career writing for agricultural trade publications that focused on the grain industry. When genetically modified organisms started showing up in the late 1990s, he specialized in covering GMO issues and also wrote PR articles for Fairfield-based Genetic ID. In 2001 he launched his own newsletter about the non-GMO market.

Over the past 12 years, the 8-page newsletter grew into a 32-page color magazine and Ken now has three employees. “There is a huge upsurge of interest in non-GMO foods,” Ken said. “Many food companies are switching their products to non-GMO ingredients and having them non-GMO verified. We saw this trend emerging early on and now we are in a good position, growing along with it.”

In addition to writing and editing articles, Ken participates in trade shows and speaks at conferences. He still occasionally writes for other magazines and his newsletter articles are often reprinted by other publications or reposted on food-related websites. He recognizes that the awareness of GMO issues keeps increasing and he hopes to double the circulation of his publication in the next year and hire more employees.

“Focusing on the GMO issue, and particularly the importance of non-GMO, has been my passion,” said Ken. “It’s why I launched my publication, and I feel like it is making a positive difference in raising awareness of this issue.”
