This past summer Maharishi University of Management faculty researcher Fred Travis spoke at the famed Esalen Institute in California as part of a five-day working conference involving 20 top meditation researchers who met to discuss the future of meditation research.
Dr. Travis presented on three categories of meditation and how effortless transcending during the Transcendental Meditation technique is the key for growth to higher states. Also, he asked the group to come together and generate a common list of measures to be given to practitioners of different meditation practices to provide an object pattern of each meditation.
Dr. Travis said the conference embraced that idea and is now working with the Institute of Noetic Sciences to create a website that anyone can log into, take a series of tests, and contribute to general patterns of improvements through different meditation practices.
He also traveled in Australia for two weeks in June, giving multiple presentations and media interviews in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. Among the venues was the Black Dog Institute, a world leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder.
Over 50 psychiatrists, psychologists, researchers, university staff, and others attended his presentation. Researchers at the Black Dog Institute are now working on a study on the Transcendental Meditation technique and depression.
Dr. Travis's presentations in Australia were attended by audiences numbering as many as 300. A number of his presentations led to discussion of collaborations with researchers.
