Maharishi University of Management (MUM) founding alumna Dr. Simi Summer's recently published articles on food purity and pesticide hazards have appeared in one of the nation's first sustainable agriculture magazines as well as in leading alternative health magazines. One of the articles reviewed the hazardous effects of conventional and Bt cotton production on the world's food and feed supply—emphasizing the importance of strict organic certification, testing, and labeling as well as consumer education on food safety topics.
Dr. Summer was one of the first students at Maharishi International University (MIU), which later was renamed Maharishi University of Management, and completed her bachelors degree in interdisciplinary studies under the direct guidance of the founder of the university, His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi along with the founding faculty. She then went on to receive multiple masters degrees from MERU, the Netherlands, Maharishi International University, and Maharishi University of Management in Vedic Studies, Education, and Vedic Science. She was awarded her PhD in Supreme Political Science, Vedic Management, and Vedic Administration by the University's founder in 1993.
Dr. Summer is a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation program and has worked both nationally and internationally for more than 40 years promoting Maharishi's programs. She commented "As a graduate student one of the most valuable experiences I had was the experience of more than 7000 practitioners of the Transcendental Meditation and TM Sidhi program coming together for the Taste of Utopia Assembly." As a result of this assembly, she was able to work with the top research faculty conducting original research on the sociological effects of the Taste of Utopia Assembly and the impact of a higher education institution on improving the quality of collective consciousness of the nation and the world.
Dr. Summer was trained by Maharishi in Supreme Political Science and feels that this training, along with a deep understanding of the Global Maharishi Effect, has given her a very expanded vision of the possibilities for lasting social change.
"One begins to see the world in terms of the quality of life indicators. The rise and fall of coherence is measured in terms of changes in the environment such as hurricanes or drought, as well as changes in the economy, the nation's health care, and the actions and statements of heads of state. Terrorism and school violence are indicators of a decline in Natural Law, reflecting a decline in coherence in collective consciousness. Conversely, a soaring stock market and consumer confidence are positive indicators of coherence rising in the nation.
"It is reassuring to know, as students and alumni, that we have in our possession the most powerful and effective technology for lasting social change the world will ever know. This is one of the greatest gifts given by Maharishi to the graduates of his educational institutions world wide."
"Maharishi developed the MERU Ideal Society Index in the 1970s to monitor the rise in world consciousness resulting from the implementation of his Consciousness-Based Education programs. It is interesting to note that over the last 20 years many such indexes have been developed globally to measure every area of social change. This includes a mother's index, women's empowerment in agriculture index, as well as measures of global happiness and global peace. As Sattva (harmony) and positivity rise in world consciousness, it will be valuable to monitor the changes in all of these areas to verify the creation of an ideal society for every nation." she commented.
Dr. Summer's interest in food purity is a reflection of her lifelong desire to create a better world as well as her interest in Maharishi Ayurveda and alternative health care. She feels that sustainable agriculture and sustainable living are important topics necessary to ensure global food purity.
Dr. Summer's vision for Consciousness-Based Education worldwide is to see greater emphasis on gender based education for women and girls in conjunction with the creation of coherence creating groups in educational settings. Such programs will include a sustainable agriculture component designed to improve the quality of life for women and their families in developing nations.
"We can only give thanks to the founder. Maharishi's Consciousness-Based Education trains us to do anything, be anything, and accomplish anything to create a better world for everyone on Earth in this generation."
