Tawanda Miller does not fit the typical stereotype of a corrections officer. Yet the petite and soft-spoken North Carolina native worked three years in a correctional facility. Instead of regarding the inmates as criminals, she saw them as troubled people, became their friend, and won their respect. Her previous training as a nurse and her deeply compassionate nature inspired her to help them. Tawanda also became a deputy sheriff—a rare feat for a woman.

Then one day her son, who is a Maharishi University of Management (MUM) student, sent her a copy of Maharishi's Science of Being and Art of LivingAfter reading the book, Tawanda realized there was a way to help inmates. She turned in her gun and badge to come to MUM and study to become a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation program.

"I have learned that true peace and fulfillment cannot be attained by carrying a gun or administering prescription drugs, but from a consciousness that is in alignment with natural law," Tawanda said. "TM not only creates freedom behind bars, but also freedom beyond bars. Just as inmates are able to better cope with prison life, they are also far more equipped to handle life outside of prison. That's why I want to dedicate the rest of my life to giving back to society as much as I can."

Tawanda is now studying Maharishi Vedic Science as well as Physiology and Health. She is proud of being a straight-A student and having learned the TM-Sidhi program in her first semester. Tawanda has always been health-conscious and raised her three children vegetarian, so she is excited to study Maharishi Ayurveda and become a Maharishi Ayurveda wellness consultant.

"Tawanda is an ideal student and a joy to have in class," said professor James Fairchild. "I could see that the other students looked up to her as a mentor and a class leader. Her intelligence, friendliness, and maturity shine through everything she does."
