Maharishi International University founding faculty member Steven Druker just published an exposé titled Altered Genes, Twisted Truth: How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government, and Systematically Deceived the Public. The book immediately sold out its first printing and is now a #1 bestseller on Amazon. It is available as an e-book, a hard cover, and a soft cover
The book features a foreword by the renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall: “Without doubt, one of the most important books of the last 50 years. I shall urge everyone I know who cares about life on earth, and the future of their children, and children’s children, to read it. . . . Steven Druker is a hero. He deserves at least a Nobel Prize.”
Dr. Goodall teamed up with Mr. Druker to formally launch the book at a press conference in London on March 4. She also appeared with him at a press conference in Costa Rica on March 20 and will join him at three others in the US and Canada in April.
The book tells the fascinating and frequently astounding story of how the massive enterprise to reconfigure the genetic core of the world’s food supply was born, how it has routinely advanced through illicit means, and how it is recklessly subjecting our health and the health of the environment to unacceptable risks.
In addition to Dr. Goodall, several other scientists have praised the book highly. David Schubert, a professor and laboratory director at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, has called it “incisive, insightful, and truly outstanding.” Joseph Cummins, a professor of genetics at Western University in Ontario, has extolled it as “a landmark. It should be required reading in every university biology course.”
Mr. Druker, who is a public interest attorney and executive director of the Alliance for Bio-Integrity, initiated a lawsuit in 1998 that forced the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to divulge its files on genetically engineered foods. This revealed that agency decision-makers had covered up the extensive warnings of their own scientists about the unusual risks of these foods and then allowed them to be marketed illegally.
In organizing the suit, he assembled an unprecedented coalition of eminent scientists and religious leaders to stand with his organization as co-plaintiffs—the first time scientists had sued a federal administrative agency on the grounds that one of its policies is scientifically unsound.
Mr. Druker was professor of law and government at MIU and authored the first core course on that topic. He also served as executive vice-president in 1975-76 and was affiliated with the University from 1973 through 1986.
