MUM physics program to explore quantum phenomena

A visionary new physics program at Maharishi University of Management that will introduce undergraduate students to advanced areas of physics such as quantum mechanics and quantum field theory will begin next semester with a sequence of calculus and physics courses.

Initially to be offered as a track in the math department, the new program was spurred by MUM President Dr. Bevan Morris, the increasing interest of students, and the desire of physics professor John Hagelin to re-enliven the physics program and involve students in cutting-edge research.

"The courses won't just be traditional physics courses, but will include deeper ideas in each course," said David Scharf, who will be involved in teaching the courses and will be administering the program.

"Physics today is very different because of the profound implications of quantum mechanics. It's not just studying the physical world. We are studying the domain of mind and consciousness."

Students will have the opportunity to learn about topics such as space-time wormholes, quantum entanglement, and quantum neuroscience.

While the new program will begin as a track in the math department, if there is enough interest it will become a stand-alone major, possibly as early as next fall.

The sequence of courses to be offered spring semester will include two calculus courses as well as a course on classical mechanics (as pioneered by Newton) and an introduction to fluids, harmonics, waves, and thermodynamics.

Dr. Scharf said that the physics program will also be of interest to students in a variety of majors. There will be a strong computational component for those interested in software development, engineering, or economics. Students interested in sustainable living could take the physics program and then go to graduate school in an area of engineering related to sustainability.

Business majors would find the program beneficial because corporations often give preference to candidates with a physics/math background due to their ability to solve problems.

Dr. Scharf said even those who haven't had a positive experience with math in the past are invited to take the program. The most important prerequisite is a strong desire to learn about physics.

He said that the program may involve the students in new areas of research that connect physics directly with consciousness and spirituality.
