When asked if he would recommend Maharishi University to other pre-med students, Daniel answered, “Yes. I’d recommend it to anyone who is interested in spirituality and natural health. I’m sure they would really like it here, like I do.”

In 2010, Daniel Nola was spending time on Facebook when he noticed an ad for “spiritual university”. Daniel clicked on it, and from then on, his life changed.

“The ad took me to the Maharishi University website,” said Daniel. “I really liked what I read, so I filled out the application, got my acceptance, packed up, and came here. I came on a whim, but intuitively, I felt like it was the right thing to do.”

Daniel had previously graduated from a community college with a degree in photography, and then worked for several years as a manager of shops and restaurants in Philadelphia.

A few days after arriving, Daniel learned Transcendental Meditation. “When I learned TM, it was different from the meditation that I had been doing before. The other meditation was more surface level, and with TM I felt like I could go deeper. It was strange at first, but I really liked it.”

Daniel also liked the block system—taking one course per month. “Some courses were hard, like the math courses. To squeeze all that knowledge in in four weeks can be intense. But once you get used to it, it gets a lot better. It’s better than taking five classes all at once during a semester.”

He also added that the small class sizes at MUM were helpful. “I probably got a lot more out of going to a school like this, than one with lecture halls filled with hundreds of students. If I had problems, teachers would be able to spend time with me. I really like that about here. It’s more intimate and close-knit.”

It didn’t take long for Daniel to decide on his major: Physiology and Health—specifically the pre-integrative medicine track which offers many courses on Maharishi AyurVeda, including Maharishi Self-Pulse Reading—a procedure by which you can monitor and correct imbalances in the body before they manifest as disease. Daniel had been interested in health ever since he had a debilitating illness after graduating from his two-year college.

“The doctors prescribed me medications, but after awhile, I realized that I didn’t want to be dependent on them. I sort of became my own doctor, searching natural remedies to ‘cure’ my problem—not just work on the symptoms. Diet was the big thing. I was eating a lot of garbage, and I realized I had built up a lot of toxins in my body. Cutting out the bad things and putting in the good things, I started getting better.”

After graduating in the spring, Daniel plans to enroll in a program to become a naturopathic doctor either at National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon or at Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington. Both schools offer courses in Ayurveda as well as herbology, nutrition and more.

But it’s not all work at MUM. Most of Daniel’s extracurricular activities revolve around the Rec Center, MUM’s 60,000-square-foot indoor fitness center. He enjoys going there everyday to do yoga, cardio, tennis, running on the treadmill, and more. And he enjoys spending time with friends.

When asked if MUM fulfilled the promise of a spiritual university, he answered, “Yes, definitely. From the first year until now, I’m very satisfied. And it’s something that I can take with me, too. I can continue to grow spiritually wherever I go.”

When asked if he would recommend Maharishi University to other pre-med students, Daniel answered, “Yes. I’d recommend it to anyone who is interested in spirituality and natural health. I’m sure they would really like it here, like I do.”
